About the company

Finlayson & McKenzie Funeral Directors is a family-owned and family-run funeral services business in Rockhampton that has been serving the community since 1885 and helping Central Queensland families for over 130 years. The business has been a member of the Australian Funeral Directors Association for the past 39 years and complies with its strict code of ethics and code of conduct. Grant Perry is the manager and a previous President of the Australian Funeral Directors Association, and he is a member of the Australian Institute of Embalming and the British Institute of Embalming.

Finlayson & McKenzie operates the only privately licensed mortuary in the region, established in 1991, employs the only fully qualified embalmer in Rockhampton, and has an in-house cremator. It has branches in Yeppoon and Mount Morgan. Services include funeral preplanning and prepaid options, interstate or overseas repatriations, a broad selection of coffins, caskets and urns, live streaming for funerals, cremation with or without a formal service, burials, funeral packages, assistance with certified copies of documents, access to floral tributes and essential documentation.

The funeral directors are experienced and qualified in all aspects of the funeral industry. Facilities and equipment are inspected regularly for compliance to maintain full accreditation. Grant Perry attends AFDA conferences and Australian Institute of Embalmers Seminars every year for ongoing training, and information from these is used in compulsory internal staff training. After the 2005 tsunami, Grant Perry was contacted by the Kenyon International Disaster Response Team to assist with a consignment to Phuket, Thailand, involving embalming and repatriation of deceased individuals to their home countries.

Based on genuine customer reviews

Compassion and attentive personal care emerge as the qualities most often described by those who have dealt with Finlayson and McKenzie Funeral Directors in Rockhampton. Family members note repeatedly that staff treated them as part of their own family, and several mention particular individuals by name, among them Collin Atkinson, Lesley, Nikki and Sandy, whose kindness, patience and willingness to answer questions at length stood out during difficult days.

Reviewers describe arrangements being carried out with dignity, from funeral services and cremations through to the delivery of ashes, with one family noting a farewell held at Nerimbra Memorial Gardens and another referring to a coffin supplied for the occasion. A detail many reviews return to is the guidance given before and after the service, including follow-up calls to check on the family's wellbeing. Professionalism, respect and a calm presence are recurring themes, and clients recall that even when minor complications arose, they were handled with sensitivity. Gratitude is expressed for the way staff eased the burden of organising a farewell, allowing families to focus on remembering the person they had lost.

On 2 March 2026, we said our final goodbye to my beautiful grandmother out at Nerimbra Memorial Gardens. From start to finish, every little detail and gesture was absolutely perfect, my grandmother would have been so incredibly happy with how her farewell went. Thank you so much to Nikki and Sandy for your love, support, compassion and for helping to give our beloved Gran the most beautiful farewell. We will never forget all you have done for us, thank you so much. 💐💜

Finlayson & McKenzie did the funeral for my friend not long ago, and it was done so beautifully. They were so caring and treated us all just like family.

The love and care that the staff and Finlayson & McKenzie showed myself and my family was beyond what we were expecting. They made such a sad and hard time so much easier than we ever thought possible. Thank you to everyone there.

My mother’s funeral was held at Finlayson & McKenzie on 12 March 2025 at 1pm QLD time. As most of her family were interstate and relying on the livestream, we were concerned when we noticed the online schedule displayed a different time. After contacting the funeral home the morning of the service to flag the issue, we were told it couldn’t be fixed. Despite this, the funeral proceeded at 1pm as originally planned, meaning anyone who followed the incorrect time would have missed it entirely. The livestream itself was poorly managed. The video started in portrait mode instead of landscape, making it difficult to view. When we called to report this, the stream was disconnected. By the time it was restored—at least 10 minutes into the service—the orientation was corrected but the quality remained abysmal. The video repeatedly dropped out, glitched, and could only be viewed at a low resolution, making details impossible to see. The audio was also difficult to distinguish, adding to the frustration of trying to follow such an important event remotely. This was a deeply upsetting experience. A funeral is a final tribute to a loved one, and families should not have to deal with such careless technical issues, especially after raising concerns in advance. The handling of this service was disrespectful and completely inadequate. I would strongly advise others to seek a more professional and reliable provider—especially if remote attendance is required.

A friend passed away this year and her parents were interstate when she passed. It was organised to view her body however there was a double booking for some reason and instead of letting her parents know that this might not be the best time to view her, they took us to the back of an old Queenslander tripping over dog bowls to a large refrigerator and sat us in a room surrounded by new coffins to view her body. She had no clothes on under the Qld health sheet that was over her body. This was not how anyone including her mother wanted to see her for the last time. She was only 23.
