About the company

Tender Funerals Canberra Region is a not-for-profit funeral service and a member of the Tender Funerals network. It was established in 2016 as Australia's first franchised non-profit funeral service, providing services on an at-cost pricing model. The Canberra region service formally opened in August 2024.

Its team of professional funeral directors and administration is supported by volunteers from the community.

What customers say

Based on genuine customer reviews

Canberra families who arranged a farewell through this community-based, not-for-profit funeral director consistently describe an approach that is compassionate, family-centred and unhurried. Staff members Jade, Adele and Bec are named for the warmth, patience and professionalism shown from the initial enquiry through to the ceremony and afterwards, with the same standard maintained by everyone the families dealt with. A point made in several accounts is the clear explanation of what was on offer without any sense of pressure, alongside pricing that customers found transparent and affordable, which allowed one family to hold a simple service for an uncle.

The care given to the deceased before and after death is spoken of as dignified and respectful, and the ethos underpinning the organisation is something several reviewers feel deserves support. One account describes a visit at Clare Holland House to discuss the arrangements, with the same openness encountered at the premises near the airport. Another family, whose son-in-law died suddenly at 39, recalls empathy extended to his widow and two young sons as the funeral was coordinated. Ongoing reassurance after the service features too, including the collection of a son's ashes a month later.

I unreservedly recommend Tender Funerals. My much loved son-in-law died unexpectedly at 39, leaving my daughter a widow and their two sons, aged 4 and 9, without a father. At the suggestion of a friend we engaged Tender to coordinate the funeral. From the moment of our initial contact through to the completion of the service (and beyond) we were treated with compassion, empathy and professionalism. The options were explained to us and everything we wished to include was catered for. As an environmentally conscious organisation who care about the planet and future generations, Tender strive to provide affordable funerals which are gentle on the environment. My son-in-law's funeral was beautiful, dignified and inclusive and provided comfort to his grieving family. The staff were unvaryingly professional as well as kind and compassionate. Should you find yourself in the position of needing to organise a funeral, contact Tender Funerals rather than the large franchises.

We engaged Tender funerals after some research on why they were established, initially in Wollongong. It’s been a month since we lost our 32yr old son and yesterday we collected his ashes from Tender. There was some initial pressure from NSW Police to find a funeral director as the hospital can charge if there are transfer delays. The last thing we wanted was to get caught up in a process that we did not feel comfortable with. Thank goodness for the lovely staff at Tender who allowed us to make our own decisions, with some gentle guidance given our complete lack of experience. We felt engaged in all the decision making and comforted that we were kept informed about every aspect from when our son came into their care. We managed the final farewell independently after a recommendation from Tender about a suitable venue. The overall funeral service cost was about a third of the cost of a commercial funeral service. We happily spent the difference on a fitting farewell for a beautiful young man taken far too soon but loved by all xox

Bec and the team at Tender provided exceptional care, compassion, and support during an incredibly difficult time. Their professionalism and empathy made the process feel far less overwhelming. They took the time to explain everything clearly, treated the situation with genuine kindness, and ensured every step was handled with dignity and respect. I’m deeply grateful for the care and reassurance they provided, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Tender to anyone needing thoughtful, reliable support

Tender Funerals were fantastic. Their staff were respectful, helpful and kind. Their venue was perfect for our low-key farewell service for my uncle, and the whole thing was affordable, with very transparent pricing. Highly recommend.

Thank you to Jade. Adele, We and the team for your outstanding service, compassion and transparency. If I could rate you more stars I would. Tender Funerals were professional, compassionate and professional from the first phone call, meeting at Clare Holland House, also in their beautiful offices in Fairbairn (near the airport) and on the day. Every one we spoke to had the same high level of professionalism and care and mum's funeral went off without a hitch. We went with them for their ethos but the price was a lovely surprise too. At no point did it feel like a transaction and as they are not for profit we didn't feel like we were being ripped off at all. A HUGE 5 STARS FROM ME!!!

Compassionate, professional and affordable funerals care. We recently used Tender Funerals, a new community-based not-for-profit funeral director in Canberra. We are so glad we did. The Tender team were much more compassionate and family-centred than the other better-known company we sought a quote from. Tender also came and met us at Clare Holland House to provide a quote and talk through their offering. It was immediately obvious they were the right fit for us. Once Mum passed, they were swift and professional with nothing being too difficult or obvious to explain as first time organisers. The funeral was perfectly run, with Tender working in advance with Mum’s Church to seamlessly organise all the specifics. Tender’s communication and responsiveness was very impressive. While only new in Canberra since 2024, they have recruited a skilled team of passionate and dedicated funeral directors, achieving an affordable and values-based offering for families which aligned with our late-Mum’s wishes. We can’t recommend them enough, Tender Funerals were just wonderful. They were also significantly more affordable and compassionate than the popular, for-profit provider we consulted with.

A friend recommended Tender Funerals to us, and we are very grateful. The team was incredibly supportive, informative, and caring for our entire family. My father was treated with dignity and compassion before and after his death. The ethos behind Tender Funerals is inspiring and deserves full support. We can't thank you enough.
